It’s unlikely the Man On Fire 2 story would follow the events of the third novel The Blue Ring because it’s incredibly similar to Liam Neeson’s first Taken movie right down to the human trafficking ring using drugs to keep the women they’re trafficking compliant. The events of the second novel could be adapted to fit with the characters of 2004’s Man On Fire, allowing Pita, perhaps, to help Creasy avenge the death of her own mother, or even someone else instead. The events of a Man On Fire 2 story wouldn’t be able to play out exactly the same way as the Perfect Kill novel, but inspiration could be taken from them if Fanning’s Pita is the apprentice he trains instead of a complete stranger.

In the second, his wife and child are killed when an explosion takes out the plane they were on, and he takes on a teenage apprentice to train him how to kill in order to avenge their deaths. In the first novel, the charge he’s supposed to be guarding is abducted and killed when he’s injured, and he takes on the organized crime group himself, killing everyone involved. Quinnell’s novels about Creasy, however, are less about Creasy being a hero and more about him seeking vengeance.
That same idea has also been used to provide sequels for stories like Netflix’s Extraction movies, demonstrating that a lengthy recovery process eventually brings the hero back to his work. Despite that, Quinnell wrote several sequels to Man On Fire in the early ‘90s that revisited the character of Creasy, revealing that he had actually survived his seemingly fatal wounds.
One thing that didn’t change is the apparent death of Creasy at the end of the story. It definitely has rewatch value, but the entire film must be consumed in one sitting.The original Man On Fire novel is set in the late 1970s in Italy, and the 2004 movie changed quite a bit of the story, including the setting to make it fit the modern day, and whether the little girl Creasy was protecting survived her kidnapping, which could mean the Man On Fire 2 story could diverge from the novels. I also think that Denzel Washington is a master at his craft, but this is not just a mindless action flick I can throw on at any time. We get an idea of his past, and we see his relationship develop with Pita. John Creasy is a complicated individual, and we see his arc in the movie. I don't even remember the name of the character Liam Neeson played in Taken, it was that generic and interchangeable. I like John Wick, but there really isn't a whole lot to the character other than he loves dogs and his deceased wife, and he knows how to handle himself. I think Man on Fire ticks all of the boxes for "characters, emotional depth, story, ending/climax, personal impact". I do hope they stop after 4, or else it will be run into the ground. I can watch John Wick from start to finish at any time.
I think Keanu Reeves is a master at his craft, and I enjoy watching his fighting scenes. It started as a basic revenge flick, and has just kept the throttle open and the volume at 11. I am the most entertained with John Wick. This really should not have become a trilogy. It's a basic action film that relied heavily on editing to make us believe the protagonist could get over a chain-link fence. I have the least respect for Taken, so I'll start there.
